July CD: Bob Baldwin's "MelloWonder"

There have been countless tribute albums to the 8th Wonder of the World, Stevie Wonder, over the years. However, when it comes to contemporary jazz, outside of Najee’s Songs From the Key of Life, none come close to the brand new release from one of the genre’s top selling artists, Bob Baldwin, who presents MelloWonder, Songs in the Key of Stevie.

Baldwin says he’s wanted to do this album for the last 15 years and put the wheels in motion for the project about two years ago. He presents a playlist of 14 cuts that feature an array of contemporary jazz staples in Grammy-nominated guitarists Chieli Minucci and U-Nam, saxophonist Marion Meadows, and flutist Ragan Whiteside, who has worked with Baldwin on several of his last CDs. One of my favorite things about this tribute release is that Baldwin steps outside of the classics of the book of Wonder and records a few that are rarely recorded, including “That Girl” and “Love Light in Flight.” On top of that, he writes a few tunes in tribute to Stevie.

Tune in all month long as we feature selections from this newest release from Bob Baldwin. MelloWonder is the CD of the Month on your source for cool jazz and more, WEAA 88.9 FM, the voice of the community.
