Senator Barbara Mikulski Announces Retirement

U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) announced today that she has decided not to run for re-election. Mikulski, who will complete her fifth term in office in January, 2017, says she wants to focus for the next two years on working for her constituents and for the nation.

Confirmation Hearings for Transportation Secretary Delayed

The confirmation hearing for Maryland’s acting transportation secretary has been delayed for a week. According to reports, state senators had so many questions for nominee Pete Rahn that a panel voted to hold another round next Monday. Senators have been asking Rahn about his plans for the agency, and they want to know where he stands on major projects like the Red and Purple Light Rail lines, which are now under increased scrutiny.

It is part of our ongoing coverage of the Tyrone West case. Tyrone West was a man who died in police custody in 2013. Region Braces for Another Round of Snow 

The area’s frigid temperatures are just a preview of the weather forecast for tonight going into tomorrow. Much of Maryland is bracing for Winter Storm Octavia, expected to be the biggest snowfall of the winter so far. Forecasts predict up to six inches possible across the Baltimore area tonight and tomorrow, and up to ten inches in areas to the south. Western Maryland is under a winter weather advisory, while winter storm warnings are posted for the rest of the state.
