President Obama To Address Senate Dems In Baltimore 

President Obama is expected to address Senate Democrats today in Baltimore. The lawmakers are meeting in Charm City to discuss strategy and messaging for the year ahead. Officials say the meeting is focused on the economy and how Democrats will approach their new role as the minority following the November elections.

MD General Assembly Session Opens

Maryland’s 90-day legislative session begins in Annapolis today with 60 new members of the House of Delegates and Governor-elect Larry Hogan set to take office next week. Lawmakers will take the oath of office this afternoon and both chambers are expected to re-elect their leaders, House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Mike Miller. Among the biggest issues the governor and legislature will be forced to deal with is Maryland’s $750 million projected budget deficit.

Washington's Metro subway system will operate on a modified and reduced schedule following an accident that killed one passenger and sent dozens to hospitals with smoke inhalation. The fatality on board the train yesterday was the first on the Metrorail system since a crash between two trains in 2009 that killed eight passengers and a train operator.

Bishop Charged in Bicyclist Death

Episcopal Church Bishop Heather Cook faces several charges in connection to the deadly hit-and-run in Baltimore of bicyclist Thomas Palermo just after Christmas. Cook is being held in the Baltimore City Detention Center accused of hitting Palermo and leaving the accident scene.  Officials say she was texting and veered into the bike lane, hitting Palermo from behind. Charges against her include vehicular homicide and DUI.
