(Baltimore, MD) -- The Maryland health department is reporting the first heat-related death of the year.

The death involved a 59-year-old man in Prince George's County.

State health officials are urging Marylanders to take the necessary steps to avoid becoming overheated.

Residents are also urged to check family, friends and neighbors who may be vulnerable to heat.

Last year, Maryland had nine heat-related deaths.
