Baltimore City Confirms First Case of Coronavirus/COVID-19

The case involves a male in his 60s. The Baltimore City Health Department is currently investigating the case.

In anticipation of positive COVID-19 cases being identified in Baltimore City, Mayor Young activated the Emergency Operations Center this week, canceled all City-permitted gatherings of more than 250 people, and suspended activities at City-operated senior center buildings. Additionally, Baltimore City Public Schools and City recreation centers have been closed for the next two weeks, and the Mayor and Sheriff have announced a two-week halt on all eviction notices.

"I want all residents of Baltimore City to rest assured that the city has been preparing for this eventual outcome for more than a month and we are well-suited to respond to this specific case," Mayor Young said. "At this time, we need all residents to take extra precautions, especially our older adult population who are at higher risk for contracting this virus."

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa said that her agency's staff has worked closely with the Maryland Department of Health and local hospitals and stand ready to assist in investigating this case.

“Our staff has been preparing for this possibility for the last two months, and will be working with all appropriate local, state, and federal agencies to address COVID-19. Social distancing remains of the utmost of importance as we aim to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

Older adults who are age 60 and older, and people with underlying conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes may be at high risk for developing severe illness. High-risk individuals should stay home when sick, and avoid crowds, cruises, and travel.

Residents can protect themselves from the spread of the COVID-19 virus by utilizing proper hand-washing practices and social distancing. People who have recently traveled to high-risk countries should stay home for 14 days and call a doctor if experiencing a fever and/or cough to determine if they need to be tested.
