Program Director/Music Director Marcellus "The Bassman" Shepard selects new releases from legends to emerging artists, that you'll want to add to your playlist.

Eddie Henderson’s All Stars

So here it is, yet another week with my desk looking like the equivalent of the New York City skyline, filled with CDs. I pull a few titles out that are priorities on my list and commence to listening. First up is the latest recording of legendary trumpeter and flugelhornist Eddie Henderson.

Within the first few measures it hits me: This is how you start a record!

His latest recording, Collective Portrait, was captured live at New York’s famed Smoke Night Club on May 12, 2014. Within the first few measures it hits me: This is how you start a record! Eddie is in the fine company of an all-star cast of players, including Baltimore’s own Gary Bartz on saxophone, Doug Weiss on bass, Carl Allen on drums, and the magnificent teacher George Cables on not only piano but also on Fender Rhodes. Now let me tell you, I’ve long been a fan of Mr. Cables, but had never heard him on Rhodes before. This brotha throws down with some serious grooves that will have you feeling like you’re listening to young lion Robert Glasper.

The material explored on Portraits features two originals by Henderson, two by Cables, and a few classics sprinkled in, from Freddie Hubbard’s “First Light” to Duke Pearson’s “You know I Care.”

Well, let me get back to listening! Next up in the stack is trumpeter Jeremy Pelt!

Until next time…

Eddie Henderson
