The race to succeed the late Elijah Cummings in Congress from Baltimore continues to heat up as new candidates enter the race.  Cummings passed away last month from cancer.  His widow, Maryland Democratic Party Chairwoman Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, says he told her before he died he would like for her to succeed him.  She will hold a news conference today to announce her candidacy.  Another hopeful, State Senator Jill Carter, says she will hold a news conference next week to make a special announcement about the 7th Congressional District race.  Tonight, Baltimore County Republican Central Committee member Kimberly Klacick will formally her announce her candidacy at a launch event in Hunt Valley.

The Baltimore Sun reports three Republican candidates have already filed for the special election to fill the seat, including Liz Matory, who in 2018 sought the 2nd Congressional District seat held by C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger. Republican Chris Anderson said he would announce a run for the 7th Congressional seat .

On the democratic side, former Congressman and NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and State Delegate Talmadge branch have launched campaigns. Former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is among others who have said they are considering running. Eight other democrats have formally filed to run.
