The Ellison Report is a weekly journal of politics, policy, and the people.

PART I: Keith Owens, Senior Editor of The Michigan Chronicle, explores recent developments in the Flint, MI water crisis, what recent criminal charges from the state’s Attorney General really mean and how this wraps into upcoming state elections.

PART II: Matt Delmont, Arizona State University, discusses how Black voters are forcing Democratic candidates on the local level to take notice of their needs and demands. Also: reflections on the impact of Black voters in the Democratic primary and the political impact of Black Lives Matter.

PART III: YouGov’s Peter Moore to discuss recent poll outlining Black voter attitudes about community or “structural” violence versus police violence. What do they want more focus on?  Also joined by WURD’s Barbara Grant to offer some perspective on community sentiments.

PART IV: Ronald Serpas, Chair of Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration, along with InimaiChettier, Director of the Justice Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School, discuss new research on the crime rate and why that’s important in today’s social and political climate. Are violent crime rates in major cities going up? And what’s that mean for both policy makers and constituents?
