According to the Baltimore Sun, Jones says the song which was adopted by the state in 1939 is extremely offensive. The Confederate-era song features lyrics favoring secession from the United States and referencing Abraham Lincoln as a "despot." Past efforts to retire the song have gained support in the state Senate, but stalled in the House.
Meanwhile, the Talbot County Council has introduced a resolution to remove a Confederate monument from the grounds of the Circuit Courthouse. The "Talbot Boys" statue features a soldier carrying the Confederate flag and the names of county residents who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. The resolution will now advance to a public discussion which has been set for Tuesday July 28th.
