Former NAACP President and CEO, Kweisi Mfume has won the special election for Maryland’s 7th Congressional District Mfume defeated Republican Challenger Kimberly Klacik. Mfume returns to Congress to fill the remainder Representative Elijah Cummings term, which ends in January.

Cummings died in October. Mfume will return to Capitol Hill to represent the 7th District as he did from 1986-1996 before stepping down to lead the NAACP.

Tuesday’s vote was unusual as it came in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and was largely a vote by mail undertaking, but three in person voting sites were open in the district.  However, those in person ballots won’t be tabulated and released for about 24 hours after polls close to give potential germs a chance to die to protect poll workers. It’s one of the safety measures that’s being taken in this unprecedented election during the coronavirus pandemic.

in November, the 7th congressional seat will be on the ballot for the full 2-year term.
