‘Missing white woman syndrome’| Racial disparities in response to missing persons cases

Missing white woman syndrome”, is a term used by social scientist and media commentators to refer to the alleged disproportionate coverage of missing person cases involving young white woman compared to the relative lack of attention towards missing woman who are not white, men and boys.

The Gabby Petito case captured the nation's attention when the 22-year-old white woman — whose death was ruled a homicide on Tuesday—was reported missing by her parents earlier this month.

The national coverage has prompted criticism of the media and law enforcement for ignoring cases of missing people of color.
