News Wrap: General Assembly Opens Session; Fire Fatality

MD General Assembly Session Opens

Maryland’s 90-day legislative session begins in Annapolis today with 60 new members of the House of Delegates and Governor-elect Larry Hogan set to take office next week. Lawmakers will take the oath of office this afternoon and both chambers are expected to re-elect their leaders, House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Mike Miller. Among the biggest issues the governor and legislature will be forced to deal with is Maryland’s $750 million projected budget deficit.

Blaze Kills Baltimore Toddler

A 2-year-old toddler was killed in a fire in a Baltimore house fire Tuesday afternoon, becoming the city’s first fire fatality this year. City fire officials say construction workers who were working nearby rescued the boy’s two young siblings and father from the row home, located in the 800 block of Whitelock Street in Reservoir Hill. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Woman Sentenced For Role In 2013 Gang Rape

A Baltimore woman has been sentenced to 30-years for her role in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at a 2013 Halloween party. According to Baltimore City prosecutors, TycheikaHartwill hosted the party in the 1500 of Cold Spring Lane and gave the victim several shots of alcohol. The girl fell asleep and woke up being sexually assaulted. After the victim became sick, Hartwell got four other men to take part in the assault. Hartwill was convicted of a first-degree sex offense and was also found guilty of facilitating three additional first-degree rapes. Robert Perkins, a Special Victims Unit Assistant State’s Attorney, tried the case, and said the survivor’s testimony was instrumental. He adds that the young woman, who is currently enrolled at a local university, showed great courage by deciding to return to Baltimore to testify against Hartwill in court. “The general perception is that rape is committed by men and not women,” Perkins said. “But in this case the jury was able to look past that perception, and see the despicable acts for what they were.”

At a news conference yesterday, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declined to give details on how quickly the fire department responded, beyond saying firefighters got to the scene in their "customary" timeframe.
