News Wrap: Gross, Pugh at SOTU, Fire Search Continues

Marylanders Guests of First Lady at SOTU

Freed Cuban prisoner Alan Gross and Maryland state Senator Catherine Pugh will be among the honored guests at tonight's State of the Union Address. Both will sit with First Lady Michelle Obama. Gross was released last month after five years of captivity in Cuba. Pugh is Maryland's new state Senate majority leader and president-elect of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. 

Family Of Six Still Missing, Search To Intensify 

A family of six is still officially "missing and unaccounted for" after their mansion was destroyed by a four-alarm fire in Annapolis.  Anne Arundel County Fire Captain Robert Howorth says over the next several days, federal investigators and large equipment will be brought to the home site on Childs Point Road to excavate and search for clues. Don Pyle, his wife, and four grandchildren were believed to be in the home at the time the fire broke out early yesterday morning. 

Wintry Mix Possible Across Maryland 

Another round of wintry weather appears to be headed into Maryland. The National Weather Service is still tweaking the forecast but, for now, forecasters say snow will move into the region late tonight and possibly mix with and change over to rain tomorrow afternoon.  A coating up to an inch is expected in Baltimore and the close-in suburbs, with more to the north and west of town. Up to two inches is possible across the upper and mid Eastern Shore. 

Firefighter Hurt Battling Body Shop Blaze 

A city firefighter is being treated for a cut to the head suffered while battling a blaze this morning at a Northeast Baltimore body shop.  No word yet on what sparked the two-alarm blaze shortly after 5:00 a.m. in the 2000 block of Belair Road. It took crews nearly two hours to knock down the flames. 

Lieutenant Governor's Future May Lead Him Back To Annapolis 

Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, whose term in office ends tomorrow,  is still contemplating his future, weighing a few job options that would make use of his law degree. The 53-year-old Brown has also expressed an interest in becoming a lobbyist, a road that could potentially lead him back to Annapolis. 

City College Raising Money For New Library 

Baltimore City College is launching a capital campaign to raise $2 million for a new library. The money would be used to turn its current library into a modern learning center offering wireless Internet, new computers, and expanded access to databases and other research materials.  School officials are hoping to have the new learning center up and running by next fall. 

Baltimore Named One Of Best Cities For Startups 

Baltimore is being recognized as one of the best cities in the nation for startup companies. A new survey by Popular Mechanics places Charm City fifth on its list of the 14 best startup cities in America. The publication cites the city's low cost of doing business and the prevalence of business incubators and accelerators as the primary reasons for the lofty ranking. St. Louis tops the survey.
