News Wrap: Immigration Activists Protest Hogan's Deportation Decision; Ravens Kick off Preseason

Immigration reform activists protested outside of Governor Hogan’s mansion on Thursday.  The demonstrators gathered following Hogan's decision to notify federal authorities when a person scheduled for deportation is released from the Baltimore jail. CASA de Maryland organized the protest. 

City Searches For Solutions To Dirt Bike Problem 

City leaders are considering ways to solve the weekly problem of dirt bike riders taking to the streets illegally. One idea came from Councilman William “Pete” Welch, who proposed that the city of Baltimore build a dirt bike park. 

According to the Baltimore Sun, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was not sold on the idea of the park. However, she did tell reporters at City Hall on Wednesday that city officials are “reaching out” to dirt bikers for a meeting, in order to develop solutions.

Rawlings-Blake Settles Police Misconduct Lawsuits for $280,000

On Wednesday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake authorized $280,000 in payments to settle three police misconduct lawsuits from 2012. Some statistics show that allegations of police misconduct have dropped.  According to the city, there were 137 complaints filed by citizens in 2014,  compared to 231 complaints in 2012.  So far there have been 75 complaints filed this year. Rawlings-Blake reiterated on Wednesday that she is committed to reforming the city's police department.  

Body Found In Inner Harbor 

A body was found in the Inner Harbor on Thursday. Onlookers watched as a crew pulled the body out of the water. Baltimore police are investigating and detectives are working on identifying the body. 

City Buys Building For Health Clinic 

Baltimore's Eastern Health Center is moving to East Fayette Street. The city approved the purchase of the building for about $3.5 million on Wednesday.  The building is currently vacant but was a medical center previously.  The city expects to have everything moved into the new building by next spring.

Baltimore Ravens Beat New Orleans Saints In Pre-Season Game One 

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and backup Matt Schaub each had first-quarter touchdown drives in the team's first pre-season game of the year.  Baltimore went on to a 30 to 27 win over the New Orleans Saints at M&T Bank Stadium.  The Ravens trailed the Saints with just under two-minutes left in the game, but Baltimore's third-string quarterback Bryn Renner made up for a previous interception with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Ravens on top with two-seconds on the clock.
