News Wrap: King Holiday, Congress Visits Cuba

King Holiday

Government offices, banks and courts are among the many closures for the Martin Luther King Day holiday. Remembrances and tributes honoring King continue as the nation celebrates the federal holiday in his honor. The commemorations this year come amid a backdrop of recent incidents in which unarmed Black men were killed by police, spurring protests and heightening tensions across the country. The Congressional Black Caucus used the occasion to promise to demand criminal justice reform, and is working on legislation that calls for body cameras for officers and a change in how police shooting investigations are handled.

Congressional Visit to Cuba

Six members of Congress, including Maryland Democrat Chris Van Hollen, are in Cuba along with several high-level State Department officials. Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson arrived to lay the foundation for the President’s plan to normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba for the first time in 50 years.

Port Discovery King Celebration

In honor of the King holiday, Port Discovery is free to visitors on Monday. Highlights include memorabilia from the Negro Leagues of Baseball Museum and exhibits on the African American Quilters of Baltimore.

Ravens Lose Offensive Coordinator

It looks like the Baltimore Ravens are looking for a new offensive coordinator since Gary Kubiak accepted a job as the new head coach for the Denver Broncos. The Ravens’ rivals in the AFC Divisional Playoff, the New England Patriots, will face off against the Seattle Seahawks in Superbowl 49 on February 1.
