The Baltimore Sun reports that District Judge Halee F. Weinstein set Officer Wesley Cagle’s bail at $1 million on Thursday. Cagle posted bond and was released several hours later. Cagle is the first Baltimore police officer criminally charged in a shooting on duty since 2008.
Cagle is charged with shooting burglary suspect Michael Johansen in the groin last December, after Johansen had already been shot by two other officers and was no longer considered a threat. This week in a press conference, State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby described the scene: Cagle came out of an alley, entered the store, and approached Johansen with his gun drawn. According to Mosby, “Officer Cagle positioned himself over top of Johansen, at which time Johansen stated, ‘what did you shoot me with, a bean bag?’ And Officer Cagle replied, “No, a 40 caliber, you piece of — .’”
In an interview Thursday with the Baltimore Sun, Michael Johansen expressed uneasiness regarding the criminal charges brought against Officer Cagle. “I don’t want him to go to prison for the rest of his life, for him trying to do his job,” said Johansen. “I don’t care if he does a day in jail. I just want him to say, ‘OK I did wrong,’ and maybe not have his job.”
Former NFL Cheerleader Sentenced for Rape
Former Baltimore Ravens Cheerleader Molly Shattuck has been sentenced after pleading guilty to raping a 15-year-old boy at a vacation rental home in Delaware.
Shattuck received the maximum sentence of 15 years, but all but two years are suspended. She will spend 48 weekends in jail, serving every other weekend. She also must pay $10,650 to the victim’s family and can have not contact with children under the age of 18, except her own. The victim was a classmate of one of Shattuck’s children at the McDonough School in Owings Mills.
Another Gun Found In Baltimore Police Holding Cell
Another investigation is underway after a gun was found in a holding cell at the Eastern District Baltimore Police Station on Wednesday. This is the second time since July that a weapon has been found in the East District station. Suspects are supposed to be searched by police before they even enter a van to be transported to a holding cell. Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis says he's extremely unhappy, because it means new protocols put in place after the July 27 incident are not being followed.
“This is ridiculously unacceptable,” Davis said in an interview with WBAL. “Its the second one in over a month from the same district station. We’ve since put protocols into place, and obviously that hasn’t been good enough.” WBAL reports that Davis is implementing secondary searches, and putting pressure on officers to take to follow policies and procedures to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
Woman, Dog Dead After Crash With EMS Vehicle
Ann Delores Scott, a 72-year-old woman, and her dog, are dead following an accident with an EMS vehicle. Baltimore County police say the EMS supervisor was responding to a call just after 3 p.m. yesterday when he collided with Scott’s car on Reisterstown Road. She was declared dead at the scene, while the EMS supervisor suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police continue to investigate.
Orioles Lose to Twins
Once the rain stopped falling, the Twins started raining down hits all over Camden Yards. Minnesota pounded the Orioles, 15-2, last night. They started the scoring with five runs in the second inning and led 14-nothing before the O's scored twice in the eighth. Miguel Gonzalez took the loss, giving up seven runs in five innings. Caleb Joseph and Gerardo Parra drove in the O's runs.
