From Trenchtown to Sandtown: Finding Marley’s Message in the Music

Join Papa WaBe, host of Reggae, Roots and Culture, Claudette Lindsay, host of Caribbean Exchange, and a distinguished panel for the next conversation in WEAA’s lecture series, From Trenchtown to Sandtown: Finding Marley’s Message in the Music, in conjunction with Center Stage's production of the musical, Marley. The event will be held May 23 at 12:30 p.m., at Center Stage.

Few artists have influenced global culture as successfully as the legend himself, Bob Marley. We'll look at how Marley used his platform to identify oppressors and agitate for social change, while simultaneously allowing listeners to forget their troubles and dance. In light of the recent uprising in Baltimore, we'll also explore how area artists are inspired by and can learn from Marley to use their music to bring attention to issues including police brutality, overincarceration, poverty, and joblessness now being raised in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray.

The event will be broadcast live on WEAA from noon to 2 p.m., hosted by Papa WaBe. Claudette Lindsay will moderate the discussion from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Panelists include Kwame Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director for Center Stage and writer of Marley; actor Mitchell Brunings, who plays Bob Marley in the production; Dera Thompkins, Bob Marley expert and music activist; and Jahiti, a Baltimore-based singer-songwriter and member of the hip-hop-reggae group, Brownfish.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. It will be followed by a 2 p.m. performance of Marley, and WEAA listeners will receive a 20 percent discount on tickets to the play. To RSVP to the lecture, visit www.centerstage.org
