The Caribbean Exchange: Common causes of chronic kidney disease

(WEAA)— March is National Kidney Month.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, 37 million people in the United States suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Approximately 9 out of 10 people are unaware that they have the disease and African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians tend to have a greater risk for the it.

Dr. Wallace Johnson, a Baltimore native, is the medical director for the University of Maryland Center of Aortic Disease and serves as the Chair of the Cardiology/Hypertension section of the National Medical Association. He also specializes in hypertension (high blood pressure) and cardiology.

He joins Claudette Lindsay and Dr. Basil Morgan, a Baltimore ophthalmologist, to discuss common causes, symptoms and treatment for chronic kidney disease.
