If you aren’t aware, in Detroit every year during labor day weekend, the world’s largest open-air free jazz festival takes place. It’s the Detroit International Jazz Festival and man, what a great time it is to gather with people from all over the globe who are equally excited about a weekend full of music featuring some of the most incredible talent in the world.
For the past 3 years, one of the highlights of the festival has been the performance of a band comprised of some of top musicians in jazz from the Mack Ave recording label, collectively known as the Mack Ave SuperBand. Each year they switch up a few members in the band.
Assembled for the recording in 2015 were drummer Carl Allen, NEA Jazzmaster and vibraphonist Gary Burton, Tia Fuller on Sax, Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Kirk Whalum on Tenor Sax, Christian Sand on piano, and musical director and Grammy award-winning Bassist Christian McBride.
The Mack Ave SuperBand performs a set list of seven tunes which showcase these musicians having pure fun on stage. Tune in all month long to hear selections from the Mack Ave Superband, Live from the Detriot Jazz Festival 2015. It’s our CD of the month here on WEAA, 88.9FM.
