Community Representation Statement & Policy
The Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. §396, et seq.) requires the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to support “non-commercial programming of an educational or informational nature” and programs “representing diverse interests and perspectives … including services to underserved audiences.” The act also requires that CPB make public media’s content available for free to rural and urban audiences throughout the United States. This is accomplished through community service grants to stations like WEAA.
Publicly owned and operated media stations, such as WEAA, are uniquely connected to American communities and are positioned to reflect and serve the diverse and varying populations of their communities. WEAA’s FCC broadcasting license is held by the Morgan State University, an agency of the State of Maryland. Management responsibilities are assigned under the administrative oversight of the Morgan State University’s Board of Regents (https://www.morgan.edu/regents).
As a public media organization, WEAA’s mission is to empower, engage, and educate our diverse audience with news and music programming. We are dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and community engagement while upholding the values of equity and public service.
Our commitment is reflected in the following:
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: WEAA is dedicated to recruiting and supporting diverse individuals who can effectively contribute to the organization, ethically and creatively. We seek individuals who can advocate successfully for public service media in the communities we serve.
- Fostering a Supportive Environment: WEAA creates an inclusive environment where all members are empowered to succeed, grow, and achieve their full potential within the organization, ensuring access to resources and opportunities for development.
- Compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Laws: WEAA adheres to the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity, upholding all state and federal regulations concerning non-discrimination in employment. This includes ensuring fairness in hiring, promotion, and other personnel actions, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, or other protected statuses.
- Annual Reporting on Community Impact: WEAA commits to completing an annual report outlining the content and services provided to meet community needs, as well as the impact of these services in fostering community engagement and public service media goals.
- Collaboration with Local Communities: WEAA is proud to collaborate with local residents, organizations, and community groups to produce and deliver content that reflects the unique needs, interests, and cultures of Maryland and the diverse communities we serve.
