(Baltimore, MD) -- Baltimore City will be under a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert through Thursday because of high temperatures that could pose a threat to the vulnerable and those with medical conditions.

Residents should protect themselves, their families and their pets and check on their neighbors to make sure they are okay.
Acting Health Commissioner Mary Beth Haller says excessive heat is the leading weather-related killer in the U.S. and it's especially bad in urban areas because of population density and heat absorbent asphalt.
Cooling centers will be open throughout the city.
