(Baltimore, MD) -- A federal judge in Baltimore has sentenced medical malpractice attorney Stephen L. Snyder to six months of home confinement and three-years' probation for attempted extortion.

Snyder represented two claimants who allegedly suffered injuries after receiving organ transplants at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Evidence stated, from January to September 2018, he attempted to extort the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). He threatened to “destroy” the UMMC transplant department by publicly accusing UMMC of tricking patients into accepting diseased organs.

Snyder demanded $25 million for himself, separate from any settlement with his clients.

The 77-year-old is suffering from medical issues that include Parkinson's disease and according to the Baltimore Banner, the judge said he would likely have received prison time if not for his medical circumstances.

Snyder was convicted in November after a nine-day trial.

In a statement, UMMS officials say they respect the judge's sentencing decision, and they are grateful that this chapter is now closed.
