Baltimore County police detective dies on duty

(Towson, MD) -- A Baltimore County Police detective, Paul Hoke, has died after he suffered a medical emergency on New Year's Eve.

He , who was 49, was surrounded by friends and family when he passed away yesterday at an area hospital.

Hoke was a 30-year veteran of the department and joined the force in December 1995.

Hoke was working the desk at Precinct 6 in Towson on voluntary overtime when he collapsed and was rushed to an area hospital.

“We are forever grateful to the Hoke family for sharing Paul with us, for the sacrifices they made, and for their unwavering support,” said Chief Robert McCullough. “His years of dedicated service and commitment to public safety reflect the character and work ethic that continue to distinguish the Baltimore County Police Department and its members among the best in the nation.”

A cause of death has not been released. Funeral arrangements are pending.
