BALTIMORE, MD (WEAA)— The redevelopment of a historic neighborhood in Southwest Baltimore is underway.
The Southwest Partnershipstates, Poppleton is home to the oldest public housing development in Baltimore, the Poe Homes, as well as newer developments including Lexington Terrace and Vintage Gardens.
Daniel Bythewood, Sr., CEO of La Cité Development says he is working to transform what neighborhoods of thriving Black communities used to be into what they will be today and tomorrow.
The redevelopment project will create approximately 1,700 to 1,800 units of housing through four phases of construction. This includes approximately 293 units of rental housing and 1,200 units of residential homeownership, of which 321 will be town homes.
The project will also include the development of approximately 100,000-200,000 square feet of commercial space between N. Schroeder and N. Amity Streets, extending from W. Baltimore to W. Lexington Street.
Additionally, the development will include, hotels, a shopping center, and office space.
