February Community Cares: The Dream Academy Inc.

The Dream Academy Inc. works with children of the incarcerated who have faced tremendous obstacles in their lives, including poverty and low-performing schools. The goal is to provide committed, caring adults who can make a difference and help children fix these gaps, and find self-esteem and direction in their young lives.

The Dream Academy Learning center in Baltimore, Maryland, was one of the organization's earliest centers. The learning center at Collington Square Elementary school opened in 2002 and served approximately 500 students in grades 2 through 8, most of whose families live below the poverty line. With support from the mayor’s office and the Baltimore City Public School office of student support and safety, the Dream Academy made a decision to relocate the program to a school and community in great need of comprehensive after school programs. The program moved to Pimlico Elementary/Middle School in South Park Heights for the 2010 through 2011 academic school year. The Dream Academy is a key partner working with the center for urban families and others towards the redevelopment of the Park Heights community. The area is currently undergoing renovation and at this time they are located at the Old Garrison Middle School, 3910 Barrington Road.
