Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said Monday that Deputy First Class Glenn Hilliard and another deputy went to an apartment complex in Pittsville on Sunday to arrest Austin Davidson.
They didn't find him initially, but when Hilliard returned a short time later, he spotted a man who matched the description of Davidson, who took off as Hilliard approached.
Hilliard chased the man who then fired multiple shots, striking Hilliard at least once. Sheriff Lewis says Hilliard succumbed to his injuries.
Hilliard was a 16-year veteran of law enforcement and would have turned 42 later this month.
