Omar Muhammad is an accomplished entrepreneurship ecosystem builder with an extensive record of fostering innovation, inclusion, and business growth. For more than 22 years, he has served as the Director of the Entrepreneurial Center at Morgan State University, where he has empowered entrepreneurs, small business owners, and underrepresented communities with the tools, networks, and resources needed to succeed. A lifelong entrepreneur since the age of 12, Omar has managed small business loan funds, developed and delivered entrepreneurship training programs tailored for women and returning citizens, and built strategic partnerships with corporations and government agencies to expand opportunities for emerging businesses.
Omar’s engagement in media, including his role as a business columnist with the Baltimore Business Journal and as a business radio talk show host for more than 22 years on an NPR station, highlights his dedication to sharing knowledge and insights with a broad audience. Through these platforms, he has helped entrepreneurs access information, strategies, and success stories that inspire action and growth. As participants in the Department of Defense Mentor-Protégé Program, Omar and his team have earned 17 Nunn-Perry Awards, recognizing their excellence in strengthening small and minority-owned businesses in the federal contracting arena. As the first African American board chair of the Technology Development Corporation of Maryland (TEDCO), he played a key role in advancing the state’s innovation and technology ecosystem.
Omar holds a Master’s in Technology Entrepreneurship from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor’s in Accounting from Morgan State University. A proud father of four daughters and two granddaughters, Omar lives by his guiding mantra: “improve and progress.”
