March Community Cares Partner: Susie's Cause

The Community Cares Partner for March is Susie’s Cause. As we celebrate Women’s History Month we honor Susie’s Cause, an organization that was founded in January 2005.

Susan Cohan fought a two year battle with colorectal cancer, leaving her children and husband behind. Susan urged her family to create a foundation to educate people on the importance of detecting colorectal cancer in its early stage, as early detection could have saved her life.

Over 50,000 people died of Colon Cancer each year and African Americans have the highest rate of both getting and dying from colorectal cancer. While the majority of colorectal cancers are diagnosed in people over 50, the disease can affect people of any age — especially those with a strong family history of colon cancer. Even more astonishing is that colorectal cancer is over 90% curable with early screening, diagnosis and treatment.

On March 19th there will be a Health festival at Mondawmin MallCenter court, including Colon Cancer education, health insurance Information, Healthy Cooking demonstrations, free health screening, fitness, zumba, face painting, entertainment and more.
