At least one person is confirmed dead and another is in critical condition following an Amtrak Train crash Wednesday morning just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. Initial reports indicate that most members of Congress are okay, but several sustained minor injuries. The driver of the garbage truck is confirmed as the fatality. No word on the driver's identity.

Amtrak said the train came into contact with the dump truck just after 11:20 a.m. Eastern time. Two Amtrak crew members were being treated at a hospital for minor injuries.  Several Republican lawmakers—including House Speaker Paul Ryan-- their staffs and families were heading to GOP retreat in West Virginia when the train collided with a dump truck. The train was headed from Washington, DC to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says President Trump has been made aware of the collision. In a statement, Amtrak said local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage.

Vice President Mike Pence, who expected to attend the retreat, posted on Twitter that he was getting regular updates on the crash. Pence said he was praying for all involved & grateful for the swift action of first responders. Pence said he’s headed to West Virginia later today as the retreat will go on as planned. Congressional members will travel by charter buses for the rest of the trip to the retreat.
