Opening arguments set to begin Tuesday in trial of accused teen cop killer

Baltimore County Police Department

Dawnta Harris, 17, faces nearly 20 charges—including murder, illegal possession of a handgun and several burglary and other charges in connection with the death  of Officer Amy Caprio.

Police accuse Harris of running down Caprio in a stolen car as she tried to apprehend him. The state was formally supervising Harris who was wearing an ankle bracelet pending sentencing for auto theft when he was arrested in Caprio's death---however, the jury will not be allowed to hear that in the trial.

Also facing first degree murder and burglary charges are Darrell Ward, Derrick Matthews, and Eugene Genius.  They were allegedly committing a burglary in a nearby home at the time she was struck by the vehicle.  Under the state's felony murder law, if someone is killed during a burglary, accomplices can also be prosecuted in the slaying.
