Teen sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a Baltimore County police officer

Baltimore County Police Department
(l-r) Dawnta Harris, Baltimore County Police Officer Amy Caprio

In May, Dawnta Harris, 17,  was convicted of felony murder for running over Officer Amy Caprio, 29,  in a stolen Jeep last year, while three of his friends burglarized a home in Perry Hall. Garry Sorrells says his daughter Amy died doing her job and standing her ground. Defense attorney Warren Brown says the sentence was not unexpected and he will file an appeal. He says his client did not intend to run over the officer.  Under the terms of the sentence, Harris will be allowed to participate in a youthful offender program at the Patuxent Institution. County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger believes justice has been served.  The other teens charged in the case pleaded guilty to felony murder and each faces 30-years in prison.
