(Baltimore, MD) -- Baltimore is launching a guaranteed pilot program aimed at reducing poverty in the city.

Mayor Brandon Scott announced plans for the pilot program in the spring and now his office has named the 200 families that will participate in the program.

"The Baltimore Young Families Success Fund puts money directly in the hands of our residents because they know what their families need to ascend the ladder of opportunity," said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. "Guaranteed income programs are proven time and time again to enhance recipients’ wellbeing, and I am excited to see the impact that these dollars will have in the lives of young families in need throughout Baltimore over the next 24 months."

Those families will receive $1,000 a month as part of the initiative.

The Mayor's Office says the majority of the participants in the program are employed while others are unemployed and receiving other forms of government assistance.

The office says families selected to participate in the program will be monitored by survey and interviewed by city officials.
