Baltimore police shoot, kill man who fired on officers

(Baltimore, MD) -- A 40-year-old man is dead after a shootout with police on North Milton Avenue Thursday evening.

Officials say around 5:30 p.m., officers observed and tried to stop the man who was wanted on a warrant.

According to police, the individual fired multiple shots at a patrol car after his vehicle became disabled.

Mayor Brandon Scott released the following statement, "Last night, BPD Officers were involved in a shooting after they observed and tried to engage an individual who was wanted on a warrant. The individual shot at the officers multiple times, the officers returned fire and killed the suspect. At this point in time, we do not believe that any officers or bystanders were harmed. This violent, tragic outcome impacts the entire Baltimore community, and our hearts are with all of those affected by this incident in every way. In line with our commitment transparency and accountability, as the investigation progresses, we will continue to keep residents informed of any additional pertinent information when it becomes available..."

The mayor says, there there will be an assessment of the shooting, "but all initial information indicates the officers did what was necessary to ensure this violent incident did not further endanger residents in the area."
