(Baltimore, MD) -- The last surviving child of Henrietta Lacks, Lawrence Lacks, Sr. has passed away at the age of 88.
Lacks lived long enough to see his family's first legal settlement this past month with a biotechnology company that used the historic cell line that belonged to Henrietta Lacks.
Her cell line was the first to reproduce indefinitely, and it has since been used in medical research around the world.
Lawrence Lacks, Sr. died this past weekend of liver failure at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
He served in the Army and then made a career as a locomotive engineer, working the Baltimore to Boston passenger trains.
He also fought to preserve his mother's legacy.
