Local control of Baltimore Police may yet be put before voters

(Baltimore, MD) -- After more than a century-and-a-half of state control, voters may be asked to consider turning over control of the Baltimore Police Department to the city.

This past week, the Baltimore City Council introduced a proposed charter amendment that would finalize the transition of the police force from state to city control.

The proposed charter amendment would require voter approval next year.

Maryland has had control of the Baltimore Police Department since 1860, when state lawmakers seized authority out of concern over the notorious Know Nothing Party.
