(Baltimore, MD) -- An award-winning saxophonist who taught generations of Baltimore students has died.
Carl Gordon Grubbs died from pneumonia January 5th at the age of 79.
Jazz legend John Coltrane was married to Grubbs' cousin and was a major influence on Grubbs, who says he was inspired to become a professional musician because of Coltrane.
He formed a jazz band in Baltimore and later taught for years at Saint Paul's School for Boys.
He performed extensively around Baltimore and toured internationally, including Colombia and Brazil.
A celebration of Grubbs' life will be held January 27th at the Saint Paul's School Chapel on the Brooklandville campus.
