Today is 9-year anniversary of Freddie Gray's death

Freddie Gray

Today marks the nine-year anniversary of the death of Freddie Gray.

In 2015, Gray, a 25-year-old Black man, tragically died a week after sustaining a spinal cord injury in the back of a Baltimore police van while he was handcuffed and shackled.

His death led to widespread riots and looting in the city, prompting the deployment of the Maryland National Guard following the declaration of a state of emergency.

Gray's arrest and death also sparked a Justice Department investigation into discriminatory police practices.

As a result, the police department remains under a consent decree aimed at reforming the agency.

Six police officers were charged in connection to Gray's death; three were acquitted, and the remaining three cases were eventually dropped by the city's top prosecutor.
