Morgan State University community honors 9/11 National Day of Service by packing thousands of meals for those in need

BALTIMORE, MD — Volunteers from various organizations and nonprofits across Maryland gathered today at Morgan State University to pack meals for those in need.

This initiative marks the observance of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, as well as National Hunger Action Month.

Organized by the Morgan State Food Resource Center in collaboration with the nonprofit 9/11 Day, The Pack Shack, and AmeriCorps, the event aimed to package a total of 100,000 non-perishable meals. Of these, 50,000 meals will be donated to the Maryland Food Bank, while the remaining 50,000 will support local colleges and universities within the Morgan community.

“As the single largest day of service in the United States, 9/11 Day reminds us that joining together in a spirit of service and kindness, no matter our differences, has the power to change lives and ultimately, our world,” said Samuel Roberts, class of 2024.

This year’s event not only honors the memory of 9/11 but also reinforces the commitment to combat hunger in the local community.

“We are proud to partner with Morgan State University, 9/11 Day, and The Pack Shack to facilitate meaningful service, packing and providing meals to those most vulnerable to hunger.” David Paine, president and co-founder of 9/11 Day.
