(Linthicum, MD) -- Maryland transportation officials are reminding residents that the deadline for REAL ID compliance is approaching.
Starting May 7, anyone over the age of 18 will need a REAL ID driver’s license, state-issued identification card, or another federally recognized form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
According to the MVA, 99% of Marylanders are already compliant, ranking the state among the top in the nation for preparedness.
“We’ve made it easy for customers to assess whether they are compliant, or not, through a myMVA account. By setting up their own myMVA account, Marylanders can see their REAL ID status, as well as other relevant driver and vehicle information,” said MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer.
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 as a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission, aims to enhance security standards for identification.
The Department of Homeland Security extended the compliance deadline to 2025 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
