Baltimore judge temporarily pauses Child Victims Act lawsuits

(Baltimore, MD) -- A Baltimore judge places a temporary hold on lawsuits filed under Maryland's Child Victims Act due to an unprecedented influx of cases.

More than 1200 lawsuits have been filed since the law removed time limits for child sexual abuse victims to pursue legal action.

According to the Baltimore Banner, Chief Judge Audrey J.S. Carrión issued a five-page order saying the decision was being made amid ongoing discussions about how all of the cases can be managed, but it does not prevent new lawsuits from being filed.

The initial lawsuits were filed before a cap on financial compensation took effect on June 1st. The limit for damages against the state and public institutions dropped from $890,000 to $400,000.

Damages for private institutions was lowered from $1.5 million to $700,000.
