(Baltimore County, MD) -- Baltimore County is looking for a developer to transform the 69-acre Security Square Mall property.
Since opening in 1972, Security Square Mall has been a retail hub for western Baltimore County.
But as shopping trends changed and major stores closed, the mall declined. In 2022, County Executive John Olszewski and House Speaker Adrienne Jones announced $30 million in state and county funding to revitalize the site.
Guided by the 2024 Reimagine Security Square plan, the goal is to create a safe, vibrant, and walkable community for shopping, dining, living, and recreation.
Officials say the Request for Proposal marks a major milestone in the effort to reimagine the retail center as a walkable, mixed-use community.
The request follows the County Council's unanimous vote to expand the Revitalization Property Tax Credit to spur redevelopment in key commercial and transit-oriented areas in the western part of the county.
The solicitation schedule includes a November 13 pre-proposal conference and a December 22 due date, with a selection expected by spring 2026.
