(Towson, MD) -- At least nine people have been taken to hospitals after a three-alarm fire at a Towson high-rise apartment building.

Baltimore County firefighters responded to the Berkshires at Town Center Apartments in the 200 block of East Joppa Road at around 7:30 Monday night and found fire and smoke coming from the third floor.

Fire Chief Joseph Dixon says crews held the fire in check as a number of residents were rescued.

Chief Dixon says the fire appears to have started in a recycling area, but the exact cause is under investigation.

There is no word on the extent of injuries suffered by the occupants who were taken to the hospital.
