(Baltimore, Md) –The Office of the Attorney General has identified the officer and the man killed in a police use-of-force incident in Woodlawn last month. Investigators also released body-worn camera footage from the encounter.

The Independent Investigations Division identified the victim as Samuel Brown, 56, of Owings Mills, also known as Big Sam. The Baltimore County officer involved is Derek Hadel, a nine-year veteran.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 16 in the area of Security Boulevard and Whitehead Court.

Hadel responded to a welfare check after reports of a man sitting at a traffic light for an extended period.

According to officials, when Hadel made contact, Brown exited his vehicle and approached the officer. A physical confrontation followed.

The body-worn camera footage shows Brown being punched by Hadel before falling to the ground.

Hadel administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived. Brown was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

The officer was not injured.
