(Baltimore, MD) -- Beginning next week, USDA sharpshooters will start killing deer to reduce their population in Baltimore City.
The city says a high deer population can lead to an elevated risk of tick-borne diseases, increased spread of invasive plant species and more crashes involving deer and vehicles.
On Monday, Leakin Park will be closed from 4 p.m. until 7 a.m. for the start of the deer removal operations.
The project will continue later this month at Herring Run and Druid Hill parks.
Officials with Baltimore's Recreation and Parks Department say the meat harvested from this operation will be donated to the Maryland Food Bank.
