Baltimore launches community action lab to boost neighborhood safety

(WEAA) — Mayor Brandon M. Scott on Wednesday launched the Community Action Lab, a 12-week paid leadership program designed to equip Baltimore residents, small business owners and community partners with tools to drive neighborhood revitalization and public safety.

The initiative is a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, the Baltimore Police Department and the Baltimore City Innovation Team. Beginning in the city's Northern District, participants will receive hands-on training in community leadership, violence prevention, environmental design, grant writing and data-informed problem solving. They will also have the opportunity to design and implement grant-funded neighborhood improvement projects.

"Baltimore's historic public safety progress — with homicides and nonfatal shootings falling nearly 60% over the last five years — is the direct result of our entire city coming together," Scott said. "The Community Action Lab is about equipping folks with the tools they need to make real, lasting change."

The city is investing $81,000 in the program, with 80% of funds going directly to community efforts. Sessions run May 18 through Aug. 7.

Applications are open to Northern District residents and community partners through May 3. The city will host virtual information sessions at 5:30 p.m. April 7 and April 29. The city plans to expand the program to additional police districts following the initial session.
