(Baltimore, MD) -- Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott says homicides and shootings continued to fall in March, extending the city's multi-year decline in gun violence.
So far this year, Baltimore has recorded 28 homicides and 61 non-fatal shootings, down 12.5 percent and 7.6 percent, respectively, from this time last year.
The mayor praised police, prosecutors, community groups, and residents, but said any life lost is still one too many.
“I want to thank the brave men and women of the Baltimore Police Department, our community violence intervention ecosystem, the State’s Attorney’s Office, my Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, the Office of the Attorney General, and most importantly, our residents for their collective effort in continuing to drive down violence in Baltimore year-over-year. Now is the time to take this work to the next level. Baltimore residents have my commitment that all of the City government remains determined and focused on enhancing public safety, just as we have been since I first became Mayor.”
He added the city will keep pushing its violence-reduction strategy.
The mayor also noted major drops in other crimes, including carjackings, burglaries, auto thefts, and robberies.
