(College Park, MD) -- The University of Maryland club tennis program has posted a public apology for a racist image that was included in a tournament program.
The statement says, in part, that the club deeply regrets sharing the image and the pain that was caused as a result of its actions.
The club says, as student leaders, they recognize the hateful history and significance of the symbol and they deeply regret the hurt it has caused.
The team takes full responsibility for failing to identify and remove the image and it has made a donation to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The team has been suspended indefinitely.
