2 Dead, dozens injured after trains collide in South Carolina

Lexington County Sheriff, South Carolina

At least two people are dead and 70 people injured after a passenger train smashed into a freight train in South Carolina this morning.  South Carolina Red Cross Spokesman Cuthbert Langley said those injuries range from scrapes to broken bones.

The injured have been taken to local hospitals. It's not clear if the fatalities were on the passenger train or freight train. Amtrak reports the Silver Service train operating between New York and Miami hit a CSX freight train a around 2:35 a.m. Eastern time Sunday in Cayce [[ KAY - see ]], near the capital Columbia. The lead engine and some passenger cars derailed. The Amtrak train was carrying 139 passengers and eight crew members.  The Red Cross reports hazmat crews responded to a five-thousand gallon fuel leak from the freight train, which has been contained. Uninjured passengers were taken to a nearby middle school, where  the Red Cross is using a reception area.
