(Annapolis, MD) -- Tax-free shopping week is now underway in Maryland.
It started Sunday and will continue through August 17, with certain purchases exempt from the state's six-percent sales tax.
The tax holiday applies to items that include clothing and shoes that cost $100 or less and the first $40 of any backpack purchase.
Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman says she hopes that the temporary relief helps boost customer traffic and sales for local businesses and purchasing power for shoppers.
