Baltimore nurse stole morphine from Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

(Baltimore, MD) -- A Baltimore nurse has been sentenced for stealing morphine from a 10-year-old patient who was recovering from open heart surgery at UMMC.

In June, Kaitlyn Chalmers pleaded guilty to obtaining morphine by fraud. Chalmers claimed she administered two doses of morphine to the patient last year, but did not document the second dose.

Other nurses later saw her with bruising and bleeding consistent with intravenous drug use and she appeared to be impaired.

She refused a drug screening and was later fired.

Earlier this month, a judge sentenced her to one year with all but 30-days suspended and she will be on supervised probation for two years.
