Baltimore author creates culturally-relevant guide for Black youth seeking employment

BALTIMORE, MD (WEAA) — Author Albert Phillips, Jr. joins Farajii Muhammad to discuss his new book and the imperative of getting young Black teens into the job market.

Y'all Hiring?: The Black Teen’s Guide to Navigating Employment is a culturally-relevant resource that speaks to the reality of Black youth seeking to obtain, maintain and exit a job.

During the interview, the Baltimore native addresses multiple factors that led to the creation of the book, shares challenges he has faced as a young Black man seeking employment and how he hopes this guide will help others learn from his mistakes.

Sometimes, I think we get wrapped up in this fantasy of— if young people just pulled their pants up, if they just put on a suit and tie, if they just knew how to interview, everything would be alright. However, as we know as adults…in a workplace, we deal with all types of things, we deal with stress, we deal with discrimination,  we deal with trying to figure out our cultural identity and keep that at the forefront. We go through all of these different things that I felt we weren’t having conversations with teenagers about and I wanted to be able to kind of bottle up this information and put it in a concise form and into a book…” -Albert Phillips, Jr.
